Calling all climate activists! calling everyone!

On Friday, September 20th, please join people of all ages--especially our young people--across the world in a Global Climate Strike. We'll be answering the call from 16-year old climate activist, Greta Thunberg, to drop what we are doing and take action. The earth is literally on fire. We’ll call on our elected officials and leaders to act with the sense of urgency the climate crisis demands.

Wherever you are on the Cape there’s a nearby action planned. And if you can’t find one close enough, start your own strike, Greta style. Scroll down the list to see the lineup of actions planned so far:

BARNSTABLE

What: Stand-in at the Cape Cod Commission

When: Friday, September 20, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Where: Cape Cod Commission, 3225 Main Street, Barnstable

Assemble at the Cape Cod Commission to demand the Commission amend its Regional Policy Plan (RPP)--the document that sets the guidelines for future development on Cape Cod--to actually reflect the scale, scope and urgency of the climate crisis. Bring signs and wear a life jacket or a yellow raincoat to signify the life-threatening emergency we face here on Cape Cod and everywhere. CAPE-WIDE

What: Write Your Cape Cod Commission Representative

Where: Anywhere

When: Starting now

Write a letter to encourage your town’s Commission member to consider 350 Cape Cod's RPP amendments NOW, not in 2020! The proposed RPP amendments would:
• Align the Cape’s growth policy with state climate goals
• Promote electric vehicles, solar energy, tree planting, energy efficient building construction, and more
• Accelerate progress toward 100% renewable energy

What: Ring In Climate Justice: A Cape-Wide Faith-Based Bell Ringing Action

When: Friday, September 20, 11:00 a.m. sharp - bells/chimes/drums for 11 minutes

Where: Churches, synagogues, Quakers and other faith communities across the Cape.

Faith communities will ring out in unison “at the 11th hour” to signify the last possible moment to take action. The following communities have pledged to 'ring in justice' for 11 minutes at 11 am on September 20th:

Global Climate Strike and “Die In” at Falmouth Village Green

Where: Falmouth Village Green, Main Street, Falmouth, MA 02540

Stand out at the Falmouth Village Green. Hear remarks from Rep. Dylan Fernandes, D-Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket and George M. Woodwell, founder of the Woods Hole Research Center, the #1 climate change think tank, and Sue Natali, 500 Women Scientists. Wear a life jacket for emphasis. At precisely 11 am, we’ll hold a “die in” lasting for 11 minutes, while bells from our area churches and faith congregations signal it’s the “11th hour” to take climate action. What: Global Climate Strike: Take a Stand as Sea Level Rises

When: Saturday Sept. 21, 11 am

Where: Multiple Locations in Falmouth - see below

Details: Join an action at one of four, iconic Falmouth locations. We’ll be holding signs marking the fearsome levels that seas are expected to rise. Wear a life-jacket and bring sign with your personal message of why you strike. Talk to local activists and neighbors about the undeniable urgency of the climate crisis, and what we can do. Opportunities to write, call or visit your elected leaders and advocate for the change we need.

SOUTH DENNIS

What: Climate Call for Action

When: Friday 9/20 at 5:30-6:30 pm

Where: In front of Dennis Town Hall, 685 Rte 134, South Dennis. Plenty of parking.

Details: The Climate Call for Action relates to the Faith Based Community Bell Ringing at 11 AM on 9.20. There are currently 27 faith-based organizations from Sandwich to Provincetown ringing their bells at the 11th hour. The bell ringing symbolizes our support and encouragement for the Cape youth to become active participate in climate actions on the Cape on 9.20 and in the future.

The Dennis rally is a multi generational and family friendly action located on the lawn of the Dennis Town Hall, 685 Route 134, South Dennis at 5:30. We will stand in solidarity until 6:30. People are encouraged to bring their own signs that express their feelings, ideas and/or demands regarding the climate crises.

What: Cape Kids Speak Out: Tell Us How You Feel About Climate Change

When: Friday, September 20, 3:30 - 4:30pm

Where: Outdoors at the Truro Community Center, 7 Standish Way, North Truro

Details: Kids and teens: What do you want to say to your parents, teachers, and politicians about climate change, Cape Cod, and the Earth? Adults: What do you want to say to the young people of Truro, Wellfleet, and Provincetown? Come and be heard in a fun, creative event on the day of the Global Climate Strike initiated by Greta Thunberg and kids around the world. There will be materials and time for you to put your message on a sign and have it seen by everyone else. There will also be snacks, music, and celebration! YOUR TOWN HALL

What: Start your own Climate Emergency Action

Where: Your Town Hall  

Keep it simple. Greta requests that people strike in front of their closest town hall, every Friday. With a sign, take a picture and post it with the hashtags #FridaysForFuture #ClimateStrike. Bonus points if you invite friends; call a local reporter; and share photos your action on social media. Find or register your event at: www.fridaysforfuture.org.
